Your Feng Shui Questions

Q. I am considering buying a house, the end house of three on the corner of the street. I have heard this is bad Feng Shui and cannot be cured. Do you think it should be avoided?

A. There is nothing you have said that suggests you should avoid that house. The Feng Shui picture of any property is made up of many observations which all are put into context.

Q. What is the correct position to fix my house number on my front door?

A. Where people can see it; that makes it easy for people to find you and so encourages an easier flow of chi.

Q. Is it true it’s good to have fishes in your home?

A. There is nothing particularly good about fish, although in some circumstances they can be a part of a Feng Shui improvement plan. Fish can also be very relaxing and calming to look at, so if you feel such an energy would be helpful for you, then fish can certainly help.

Q. My front door faces the south. If I am looking at the house from the street, should I place a pond on the left of the porch?

A. There is no overwhelming reason to give a yes or no answer to your question. So long as you keep it in proportion to the garden, and keep the water clean it is likely to be fine.
The placement of water to achieve a particular Feng Shui based result is quite complex; we would need to take both the physical form of your home and the chinese compass readings into account.

Q. I have been told not to position the head of my bed under the window; why is this?

A. It's to do with protecting your back; our most comfortable position is with our back to a solid wall, facing open space - that way we can see danger approaching. With a window behind your head (or when you sit up, it's behind your back), you lose that visibility and that makes you vulnerable. This is all built into our instinctive behaviour patterns.

Q. Is it true that if everyone in my house puts down the toilet seat after use it will make me wealthier?

A. Highly unlikely, but if you can try it without causing upset among your family, then you will soon know for yourself.
The toilet is connected with your own personal waste energy leaving your home and can certainly be seen as a drain, but seat down or not this remains true. In most cases the finer features of your toilet are just meaningless in the larger scheme of things. Personally, I don’t worry about it, and I certainly don’t worry my family with such things.

Q. Is it bad Feng Shui to have photo’s of your children in your bedroom and if so why?

A. Decorations in a bedroom should support it’s primary purpose; to provide a private and restful place to sleep and recharge your energy. Pictures of your children are OK so long as they are appropriate for your room - so a few framed photos on your dressing table may not be a big problem, whereas a wall filled with larger brighter family pictures could tend to be working against the main function of the room.

Q. Can you please advise on vertical and venetian blinds – I have heard that they are not good Feng Shui. Is there a solution or do you have to replace them with a roller blind?

A. In most cases, vertical and venetian blinds tend to be left half open; the sharp edges create unhelpful cutting chi in the window. While you can certainly think about avoiding these type of blinds when you redecorate, just keeping them fully open and drawn back or fully closed gets around the problem.

Q. Which way should my bed face?

A. In so many cases these days, bedrooms offer only one position for a bed, so if that’s the case then just follow the form of the room and put it where the room dictates. If you have a choice of positions, then try them all and see which one gives you the best nights' sleep.

Q. I’ve heard that vertical blind are bad Feng Shui; what can you tell me?

A. It’s the sharp edges that often end up pointing into the room that cause the problem of cutting chi with venetian and vertical blinds. If the blind is completely open or completely closed, then it’s OK.

Q. Why is a wind chime supposed to bring good luck?

A. There is nothing special about a wind chime. However, when you hang or place something in the right spot, it can create an active focus point and so help to change your energy.

Q. How come science doesn’t mention chi?

A. Science can only really comment on what it can measure, and so far there is nothing that can measure chi in a scientific way. In Victorian times, they did talk about the Ether. Today, science talks about the existence of dark energy, but as yet nobody has been able to measure it, and of course nobody knows what it does. These ideas of Chi, Ether or Dark Energy seem very much the same.

Q. Do I need to know anything about Feng Shui to have a consultation?

A. No - Mike will tell you everything you need to know.

Q. I have a pond in the Southwest corner of my garden and my neighbour has moved the fence thus creating a 'v' at the back of the pond. Would it be a good idea to plant a Blackthorn tree in this 'v' and if not what would you recommend.

A. Play safe and avoid blackthorn; it’s quite an aggressive and unpleasant plant in its form; that’s why its sometimes used to deter intruders. In general I would avoid putting it in a garden as it can create unhelpful chi.

Q. Can Feng Shui help me to win the lottery?

A. The odds of winning the lottery jackpot are enormous, and Feng Shui is unlikely to be able to push you that far forward. (If it was that easy I’d be sitting on the beach in the Bahamas sipping Champaign ). Winning the lottery is more to do with heavens chi than earth chi.

Q. I have stairs leading down to the front door and I have read that this is really bad. Can you do anything to fix it?

A. Your home will have many features that make it into the whole. While the position of your stairs may not be the best, it may not be so bad either; there are likely to be other aspects that are very good. A Feng Shui consultation can show you the whole picture and how to get the best out of what you have, whereas a book can only ever give you a very limited view.

Q. I am getting really confused with everything that I am supposed to change around every year; can you help?

A. Mike sees the yearly rearrangement of cures as a very small part of a much bigger picture. During a consultation, Mike concentrates on the really important things in the environment around you; these have to be right before its worth worrying about the smaller yearly changes. In his own home, Mike doesn’t worry about cures that change every year.

Q. Does my house have to face south to have good Feng Shui?

A. Not at all. There are many things that go to make up a good situation from a Feng Shui perspective and compass direction is just one of them. You also need to thing about the physical form.

Q. I have been living on my own in a small house, but recently my daughter moved back in with me. With all her things around I feel like I can’t move; completely hemmed in. I don’t want to do anything any more. If I try to clean up I just don’t know where to start, so I do nothing. If I try to do my creative hobbies, there is nowhere to work so I end up back in the chair again. What can I do about it?

A. It is most likely that your chi has become completely stuck due to the invasion of your space by someone else’s clutter. The only real solution is to get your space back again, which means encouraging your daughter to move out again.
